Portrait Pricing

Standard Pricing

The standard prices and options listed are for a single pet, head and shoulders only. Additional pets or full body can be added to medium or large portrait sizes only, with additional costs starting from £40. See below for details.

Choose a style and check below for available sizes and prices. For comparison, sample portraits are included below. Pastel and watercolour are both full colour formats, but whilst watercolour is a softer and more painterly look, pastel portraits feature finer, more realistic detail. Graphite pencil portraits are monochrome, highly detailed and realistic.

Sizes given below are approximate and include a border around the portrait to allow for mounting/framing.

How are portraits priced?

How are portraits priced?

The price of your portrait will depend on the size and the style, which directly affect the materials and labour needed, but to give some insight into how prices are determined here is some additional information.

- Materials

Some materials, such as paint/pastel and paper/board, are more expensive than others and a large painting uses much more of these materials than a smaller one. As portraits require high quality materials that will not fade or change over time, the watercolour and pastels used carry a much higher cost than pencil. Similarly, thick, high quality paper or board is needed. For watercolour, the paper must be tough enough to handle all the water and well-made enough to allow for smooth flow of the paint. For pastel, the board must be able to handle the many layers of colour require to capture fur textures. For graphite pencil portraits, the paper must be sturdy enough to handle layers of drawing, and to be high enough quality to last a long time.

- Labour

Whilst watercolour is a much more expensive medium than pencil, it also requires fewer hours of work to create a beautiful portrait; around 6-8 hours for a small painting not including drying times between layers. In watercolour, soft layers and strokes are used to create the illusion of texture, whereas with a realistic pencil drawing each individual strand of fur must be drawn in. As a result, a pencil drawing can take 3 times as long as a watercolour and a pastel drawing may take perhaps 2 times as long as a watercolour for the same reasons. Obviously the time needed to create a portrait increases with the size of the artwork.

Packing & Delivery

Packing & Delivery

For all pastel and watercolour artwork, shipping costs £9.99. This covers secure, flat packaging with your portrait layered in sturdy board and protected by tissue or glassine paper, and prompt delivery via secure courier. For pencil portraits, which are on heavyweight paper rather than board, you can opt to have your artwork delivered carefully layered with tissue and rolled in a postage tube to reduce the shipping cost to just £8. Portrait packaging is also intended to be used as storage for your artwork prior to framing.

Gift Certificates

Memorials

Gift certificates are available for portraits, valued at the standard portrait prices. They are valid for one year from the date of issue and can be used towards any portrait commission of the same value. Alternatively, they can be used as part payment towards a portrait of higher value. Gift certificates are digital and can be delivered to the buyer or directly to the recipient. See here to purchase.

Optional Extras

Memorials

Portraits can be upgraded into a memorial, for an additional £5 cost, by the addition of hand-lettering featuring your pet's name, year of birth and year of passing. The memorial upgrade can only be selected on initial booking as it affects the dimensions of the portrait slightly to accommodate the hand-lettering. It cannot be added after a portrait has been started.

Optional Extras

Included in each of the portrait prices above is a head and shoulder portrait of a single pet painted to fit within a mount or frame of the chosen dimensions (actual paper/board may be larger than the published size). A simple single-colour background can be added at no extra cost. Please contact to discuss your colour choice if you choose to add a background.

If you have more than one pet, additional pets can be added to medium (10"x12"- 2 pets max) or large (12" x16"- 3 pets max) portrait sizes only. Each additional pet carries an extra charge starting of £40. A full quote can be provided - simply use our contact form to send information on the size and style you are interested in.

Please note that additional services offered will be highly dependent on the quality of references that can be provided. Head only portraits are preferred simply because of the fact that they are much easier for clients to provide high quality photos for and allow for the best detail in the painting.

For any additional services or for background options, digital mockups will be provided prior to finalising any quote or order. No work will begin until mockups and quotes are accepted and 30% deposit has been paid.
